The National Blood Transfusion service has sent out an Amber Alert on stock levels. Direct communications have been made to all NHS Trusts who will be enacting local responses and actions. This Amber alert will not affect patients with red cell disorders who require regular or ad hoc transfusion, such treatments will proceed as planned, however there could be a small reduction in the number of units where it is clinically appropriate to do so. However planned elective surgical procedures may be cancelled or delayed and that may impact some red cell disorder patients who require elective pre-operative transfusion.
Please liaise with your local transfusion teams around any such planned procedures.
